Annual rankings factor in veteran and military students’ success rates
Military Times today announced that Brandman University ranked 18th on its Best for Vets: Colleges 2017 rankings for online and nontraditional colleges.
The annual rankings factor in the results of Military Times’ comprehensive school-by-school survey of veteran and military student offerings and rates of academic achievement. Brandman has been among the top-ranked schools since the rankings began eight years ago. Last year the university was ranked 22nd.
“We are honored to be recognized for our ongoing efforts to provide the best possible support to our military and veteran students and their spouses. We know our quality academic programs are what today’s military and new veterans want and need,” said Nirmala Sharma, assistant vice chancellor for Military and Veterans at Brandman University.
“Today, nearly a third of our undergraduates and 24 percent of all students are either active duty military, veteran or their dependents. At Brandman, these students thrive, which is one of the reasons we have been selected for again for recognition in the Best for Vets rankings. Military and veteran students are both our heritage and our future. We want our innovations in education to match their goals and help transform their lives,” said Chancellor Gary Brahm.
Established in 1958 at the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Orange County, Brandman’s original purpose was educating military personnel in the post-World War II era as a special service of Chapman University. Marines could tap to the new GI Bill benefits directly on base while still remaining on active duty.
Initially known as the Residence Education Center, the program became wildly popular, eventually taking the name Chapman University College and expanding to offer degree programs to military spouses and civilian students. Through the next four decades, it would provide access to higher education for thousands of nontraditional students at locations across the United States. Six campus locations are housed at military facilities: Lemoore Naval Air Station and Travis Air Force Base in California and Bangor Naval Base Kitsap, Joint Bases Fort Lewis and McChord Field and Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in Washington.
As with all Best for Vets rankings, Best for Vets: Colleges 2017 is an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many factors that help make colleges and universities a good fit for service members, military veterans and their families. More than 500 colleges took part in this year’s detailed survey.

Both the Military Times and Brandman University devote the entire month of November to veterans, not just Nov. 11, Veterans Day.
“We limit our list to encourage competition, and we genuinely hope this helps raise the bar for veterans on campus,” said Amanda Miller, editor of Best for Vets.
