Chancellor Andrews' CV

David W. Andrews, Ph.D. is a lifelong educator committed to equity and access through personalized student centric approaches. In June 2022, he was appointed to serve as the chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Global, a private nonprofit online university affiliated with the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Andrews also serves as president of the non-profit National Laboratory for Education Transformation (NLET). Before joining NLET he was the president of National University. During his five-year term as president, National University substantially improved retention and graduation rates, graduated its largest single class of over 6000 students, launched its first doctoral programs, nearly doubled its endowment/reserves to over $1B, and was reaccredited by WASC for the longest possible term of 10 years.

Dr. Andrews also served as the dean of the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University. During his tenure the School of Education established a reputation for quality that earned it U.S. News and World Report’s #1 ranking of Graduate Schools of Education two years in a row. While at Johns Hopkins he led the design, build, and start of the first new public school (PK-8th Grade) in East Baltimore in over 25 years. Before his work at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Andrews led a merger that resulted in the creation of the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University and was the new college’s founding dean. His scholarly work has focused on intervening in the life course of high risk and difficult to serve students.

Dr. Andrews holds a bachelor’s in Psychology from Auburn University, a master’s degree from Kansas State University, and a Ph.D. from Florida State University.

Professional Experience

National Laboratory for Education Transformation (NLET)

• Feb 2022 – Present — President
  Lead the NLET non-profit focused on improving student success and enhancing workforce opportunities. Projects focus on both K-12 and higher education transformations in school districts, state education systems, and universities. Advancing work on precision education including competency-based credentialing, holistic student support, and adaptive instruction with specific focus on education to work.

Versidi of Bertelsmann Education Group

• Jan 2022 – Present — Chief Academic Officer
  Lead the design, implementation, and scaling of the academic components of Versidi, funded by the Bertelsmann Education Group. Versidi was established to launch Teach Us, a branded entity addressing the U.S. national teacher shortage. Teach Us will deliver strategic pathways to becoming a certified, high-quality educator in multiple target states within the United States.

National University

• 2016 - July 2021 — President
  Chief executive officer overseeing an annual budget of $240M. Provided leadership for academic and operational functions. Used NU funds and flagship status to strategically expand National University System enrollment from 30,000 to 45,000 students. Graduated the largest single class (6021 students) in NU’s fifty-year history in 2021. Awarded first 10-year term of WSCUC accreditation. Secured over $150M in gifts and philanthropic funds. Transformed the institution from masters serving to doctoral serving designation.
• 2010 - 2016 — Dean and Professor, School of Education.
  Chief administrative officer responsible for academic and non-academic operations for the School of Education. Participated in university decision making through the Council of Deans, University Development Council, Institutional Risk Management Advisory Board, Trustees’ Academic Affairs Committee, and other assignments. Annually enrolled approximately 2,100 graduate students served by 63 full time faculty and 520 research, instructional, and professional staff. Annual budget of $82M. Secured over $50M and philanthropic funds. Ranked #1 USNWR Graduate School of Education (2014 and 2015).

The Ohio State University

• 1996 – 2010 — Professor, Dept. of Human Dev. & Family Science, College of Ed. & Human Ecology.
  Participated as graduate faculty member with responsibilities for teaching, research, and service.
• 2006 – 2008 — Dean, College of Education and Human Ecology.
  Led the merger of the College of Education with the College of Human Ecology and became the founding dean. Chief administrative officer responsible for all academic and non-academic operations of a college with 179 faculty, 323 staff members, 1706 graduate students, and 3105 undergraduate students with an operating budget of over $65M. Secured over $20M in gifts and philanthropic funds. Led athletic initiatives including oversight of NCAA reaccreditation focusing on academic integrity.
• 2005 – 2006 — Interim Dean, College of Education.
  Provided overall leadership to the College of Education. Directed charge from the provost to stabilize fiscal status, restore national rankings, and investigate advantages of a merger with the College of Human Ecology.
• 2000 – 2005 — Founding Director, Center for Learning Excellence
  Center for Learning Excellence, established to promote the implementation of best practices in education, mental health, substance abuse, delinquency and violence prevention, and family supports and engagement. Provided policy advice, research, evaluation, staff training, and technical assistance to state legislators, state agencies, school districts, and 129 Alternative Education programs in Ohio.
• 1998 – 2006 — Dean, College of Human Ecology
  Provided overall leadership for the College of Human Ecology. Participated in university decision making through the Council of Deans. The College of Human Ecology served approximately 2,000, 55 faculty members, 85 staff, and a $22M budget.
• 1996 – 1998 — Assistant Director of Extension, 4-H Youth Development.
  Provided leadership to the Ohio 4-H Youth Development Program and Ohio 4-H Foundation. Program reached over 230,000 youth through the efforts of 150 paid staff and 35,000 volunteers. Ohio 4-H Foundation raised $900,000 per year in private funding to augment local, state, and federal funds. Participated on the Administrative Cabinet of The Ohio State University Extension.

  Areas of specialization included adolescent and youth development, program development and evaluation, and parenting.

Oregon Social Learning Center

• 1996 – 2010 — Research Scientist

  Co-Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator on National Institute of Mental Health and National Institute of Drug Abuse projects developing and assessing the effectiveness of school and community-based prevention programs for adolescents. Worked on projects to adapt prevention initiatives to urban environments, longitudinal studies of delinquent youth, and elementary school prevention programs for high-risk youth.

University of Oregon

• 1989 – 1995 — Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Psychology.
  Taught courses in developmental psychology, social development, and research methods.
