School counselors play an important, varied role for today’s students, providing mental health counseling, college and career guidance, and acting as liaison between schools, parents, and students. Designed for students seeking to become K-12 school counselors, the rigorous master’s degree in counseling coursework includes the PPS credential, accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Students will:
- Learn to apply the latest core counseling theories with a thorough understanding of the legal and ethical issues involved.
- Explore the dynamics of individual and group counseling and intervention.
- Develop the skills needed to become better communicators with pupils of all backgrounds and cultures.
- Model and apply counseling strategies to address student social and emotional challenges, as well as preparing student for transitioning to college or the workplace.

Admission Requirements
Applicants for the Master of Arts in Counseling and Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Counseling program must complete the formal application process with all required documents, which include:
- Completed application
- An autobiographical essay (2-3 pages)
- 2.75 grade point average (GPA)
- Current Resume (showing experience working with children)
- Official transcripts from all regionally accredited institutions where baccalaureate and/or post-baccalaureate coursework was completed or attempted
Program start dates
Program starts three times a year in Fall 1, Spring 1, and Summer 1. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
Stand Alone Credential
A stand alone School Counseling Credential may be available to candidates who have earned a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, Counseling, or the equivalent in a directly related field from a regionally accredited institution.
