UMass Global, in partnership with Shanghai Open University (SOU), is excited to announce the 2026 International Educational Leadership Short-Term Program in Shanghai, China!

Program Dates: May 6-17, 2026 (includes check-in and check-out dates)

This unique 10-day program provides an immersive experience in Chinese culture, education systems (PreK–12 and adult education), Chinese language, and the vibrant city of Shanghai. Designed for individuals who are less familiar with Chinese culture, the program offers a valuable opportunity to gain firsthand experience, build professional connections, and develop a global leadership perspective.

Access Your Application

  • Cultural Immersion in Shanghai: Explore one of China’s most dynamic cities through organized activities and events, with some free time to pursue your personal interests.
  • Educational Site Visits: Gain firsthand knowledge of China's education system by visiting schools across all grade spans, from early childhood to university. Engage in meaningful conversations with administrators, teachers, and staff.
  • Workshops & Exchanges: Participate in small face-to-face workshops for cultural and educational exchanges.
  • Language Learning: Experience a full Chinese language environment and learn basic words and phrases to help during your stay.
    Community Building: Connect with UMass Global staff, alumni, and partners in a pre-trip virtual session to prepare for the adventure and foster camaraderie.
  • Earn PD Credit: Successfully complete the program and receive UMass Global Professional Development Credit.

  • The program fees for tuition, learning materials, inner-city tours and transportation, breakfast, lunch, and accommodations are completely free of charge and will be covered by Shanghai Open University (SOU).
  • Accommodations will be arranged at a hotel near the campus. All participants will have their own hotel room but will be responsible for any incidental costs at the hotel.
  • Participants are responsible for covering their international airfare, visa costs, fees incurred when applying for a visa, dinner, and any personal expenses while in China.

  • Application Open: November 3rd

  • Decision Letters Sent: January 16, 2026
  • Commitment Date: February 2, 2026

Preference is given to UMass Global PK-12 partners, PK-12 affiliates, and alumni.

We will limit participation to a maximum of 2 individuals per organization to promote balanced participation and a broad exchange of ideas.

Please note: Applicants who have previously participated in the program or whose prior applications were not accepted are not eligible to reapply.
