Program Overview

The course looks at important aspects of data communications, data networks, and the Internet along with key facets of protocol architectures, TCP/IP, and Internet-Based applications. The concepts and terminology centered on data transmission, transmission media, signaling encoding techniques, and error detection/correction are also covered.

The course will explore binary numbering systems and IPv4 and IPv6 addressing schemes. Switching and routing techniques are presented as well as how networks are segmented for security and efficiency purposes. The course wraps-up with a look at the value of data link control protocols and multiplexing in data communications and networks today.

This course is taught with UMass Global’s LIVE ONLINE training format using a video communications software. Students receive the same high-quality training as found in a traditional classroom setting.

Upon successful mastery of this course, you will be able to:
  • Explain the role of protocol architectures, TCP/IP, and Internet-based applications in the network today
  • List the various types of network hardware devices and describe their functions
  • Explain network segmentation and correctly identify broadcast and collision domains in a network
  • Perform the conversion process between decimal, binary, and hexadecimal numbering systems
  • Demonstrate knowledge of IPv4 and IPv6 addressing schemes and the ability to correctly subnet IPv4 networks
  • Differentiate switching and routing in a network and explain how they are accomplished
  • Differentiate transmission media, signaling, and encoding processes employed in data communications
  • Describe error detection and correction techniques and explain the purpose of data link control protocols and multiplexing in support of data communications and networks
  • Discuss the role of WiFi in networking and explain how it operates
