Biography

 

Carole A. Cowan has been an enormous player in the legacy of Middlesex Community College. Starting as a faculty member in 1976, she served the college for almost forty years in various positions – including being appointed as President in 1990, serving for 25 years before retiring in 2015. Dr. Cowan oversaw the development of both the Bedford and Lowell campuses, making Middlesex Community College one of the largest and most comprehensive community colleges in the state.

 

As an active leader on the local, state, and national levels, she was taped for a leadership role in the American Association of Community Colleges international programs and through her vision and campus initiatives, Middlesex Community College created programming in over 26 countries. Upon retiring, the Middlesex Community College Board of Trustees and the Department of Higher Education honored her service by naming the Lowell Campus’ signature building, The Dr. Carole A. Cowan Center.

 

Dr. Cowan has received numerous awards, including the North Suburban Chamber of Commerce Businessperson of the Year; the Key Player Award from the MA Telecommunications Council; the Outstanding Educator Award from Salem State University; the Women’s Business Hall of Fame Award; and the Distinguished Citizen Award from Yankee Clipper, among others. In honor of her service and commitment to public higher education, she was awarded honorary degrees from Suffolk University, Salem State University, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

 

Dr. Cowan is a proud graduate of public education in Massachusetts, earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Salem State University, C.A.G.S. from Boston State, and doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of Enterprise Bank and Trust, serving Greater Lowell and the Southern New Hampshire regions. In addition, she continues to serve Middlesex Community College as a member of the Foundation Board of Directors, and most recently was elected as the President of the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center Foundation Board (Lakewood Ranch, Florida).
