Biography
After 26 years at Standish Ayer and Wood Asset Management in Boston, Maria D. Furman retired as Managing Director and Bond Portfolio Manager where she managed bond portfolios for taxable and tax-exempt clients including insurance companies and high net worth trusts. She led the municipal bond investment team of 13 professionals who managed $6 billion in assets, worked with the insurance team as the crossover strategy specialist, and served as a member of SAW's compensation committee for the investment staff.
Ms. Furman most recently was a member of Standish’s 8-person Executive Committee, Head of the Municipal Bond department, Chair of the Marketing Prioritization Committee, and co-founder of the Short-Term Asset Management group. She has served and continues to serve on several boards, including: Mass Mutual Funds, G.M.O Series Trusts, Wheelock College, Rivers School, Partners in Health, Squam Lakes Association, Cambridge Associates Fiduciary Trust Co., and Naples United Church of Christ.
She has been an avid supporter of UMass since graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She was appointed to the UMass Board of Trustees in 2009 serving as the Board’s Vice Chair, chair of the audit committee, a member of the academic and student affairs committee and the administration and finance committee. She has also served on several ad hoc committees including the UMass President’s Search Committee in 2015.
