Course Overview

This course will help you understand what the science of reading actually means and evaluate the main components of reading instruction in relation to an approach using the science of reading. You will reflect on your own reading support and consider how your current instruction aligns with reading research. You will also evaluate objections and limitations of different reading programs and consider the differences and similarities between reading and literacy to help you develop a well-rounded view of reading education.

You will analyze and learn about this topic through videos, articles, studies, and other resources. You will also design a comprehensive implementation plan for the classroom and an original resource that can be used to support implementation.

Course Objectives

  • Analyze the components that the science of reading is thought to consist of
  • Evaluate various reading program strategies within the context of research
  • Assess effectiveness of individual and combined approaches to reading
  • Compare lesson purposes between reading and literacy improvements
  • Critique, analyze, and summarize specific articles, resources, and studies on various research reviews regarding reading program effectiveness
  • Build and describe the use of a resource that can be used to supplement your reading instruction aligned with research
  • Plan and build a Classroom Implementation Plan for immediate classroom use focused on designing an updated plan for supporting reading instruction in the classroom

Course Topics

  • Module 1: Lesson. The video and article will teach you about the basis of the science of reading present in education circles today, and the main components of effective reading instruction.
  • Module 2: Quiz. Answer questions related to reading instruction and literacy.
  • Module 3: Reflection. The reflection requires you to plan for the use of the “try this task.”
  • Module 4: Reading and Content Summaries.
  • Module 5: Resource Design. You will design a classroom resource aimed at supporting course concepts.
  • Module 6: Implementation Plan. You will design a plan to build new strategies into your classroom environment to support your students.
