UMass Global is excited to partner with Hou Kong Middle School (HKMS) to offer an immersive 8-week international teaching internship in Macau, a special administrative region of China. This unique program gives you the opportunity to gain real classroom experience, develop global perspectives, and engage with a dynamic multicultural community.
- Program Length: 8 weeks
- Location: Macau SAR, China
- Placement: English and general studies classrooms across HKMS’s five campuses
- Grade Level: Middle School
- Your Role: You will support classroom instruction, assist teachers, engage in school activities, and immerse yourself in daily life in Macau, guided by HKMS mentors and UMass Global (UMG) faculty.
- Hands-On Teaching: Support English and general studies classes, co-teach lessons, and contribute to extracurricular activities.
- Fully Provided Housing: Private bedroom in shared apartments with WiFi and utilities included.
- Financial Support:
- $100/week living stipend
- 50% airfare reimbursement (up to $700)
- Airport transportation provided upon arrival in Macau, from the airport to the school, and from the school back to the airport for departure
- Mentorship & Supervision: HKMS mentor teachers + UMG faculty support.
- Cultural Immersion: Orientation, cultural guidance, and semester-long support while living in one of Asia’s most vibrant regions.
- Visa Assistance: HKMS supports extensions up to 60 days.
- Earn PD Credit: Successfully complete the program and receive UMass Global Professional Development Credit.

Preference is given to current UMass Global undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Education, but open to all undergraduate and graduate students at UMass Global.
Applicants must:
- Be a UMG student in good standing
- Hold a valid U.S. passport (or eligible nationality)
- Be a native English speaker or C2-level proficient
- Pass a background check
- Carry medical and travel insurance
- Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, and interest in global citizenship
- Assist and lead English-language lessons
- Support mentor teachers and classroom activities
- Follow weekly teacher schedules
- Help with school events (1 evening + 1 Saturday required)
- Adhere to HKMS dress code (white top, black bottom)
- Host one family engagement activity during the term
