IRVINE, Calif. (Jan. 12, 2023) Lunar New Year, observed throughout multiple countries in East and Southeast Asia is gaining prominence in the United States. California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed a bill enabling state workers to take time off for the occasion, observing that "Lunar New Year celebrates a chance to leave behind the troubles of the past year and invite prosperity and good luck moving forward."

Lunar Year Year is called by different names among different groups of people, according to History.com. Mandarin speakers can refer to the event as the “Spring Festival” or Chūnjié, while the celebration is called Seollal in Korean and Tết in Vietnamese. Observances can take place for as long as 15 days and this year, they are scheduled for a January 22 start.
