CTEL Authorization & CLAD Certificate

The CTEL Authorization & CLAD Certificate is a four-course, fully online program addressing the belief that teaching English learners requires an understanding of first and second language acquisition theories in order to provide a successful education environment. Students are required to apply for graduate admission and provide a copy of their teaching credential before beginning this program.

Tuition

The tuition of these courses is funded by the Project Endorsement+ National Professional Development grant and is based upon availability of funding by the U.S. Department of Education. The grant does not cover any additional cost such as transcript and textbook fees.

Who is eligible?

Educators holding an active CA credential working in a CA school district. Space is limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Tuition - $0 ($2,400 value), textbooks (approximately $100)
  • Standard course drop policies apply. Student assumes financial responsibility after first week of session
  • Program sequence must be followed and no doubling of courses within the program is permitted
  • Enrolled students who drop or disenroll may not return to grant cohort programming
  • Full participation is expected in all course elements. All course requirements must be completed, and students must pass all courses with a grade of ‘B’ or better to allow for CTC recommendation
  • Student agrees to grant based pre and post coursework surveys
  • Students receiving financial aid from federal or state programs, regulations require that a student’s financial aid eligibility cannot be exceeded. If your eligibility is already being met, then the grant funds you will receive require an adjustment in the assistance you have been offered from UMass Global. This may mean that loan funds you have been offered or paid will be reduced. If, on the other hand, your eligibility has not been met, a change to your award may not be necessary
  • Design curriculum to assist students with developing their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English.
  • Understand how culture impacts learning; appropriate bilingual methodology; and the need to use appropriate content area instruction through Specially-Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE).
  • Learn the thematic multilingual pedagogy founded upon the need for students to be social and communicative in their learning.
  • Study the current approaches and strategies appropriate for content area instruction through specially-designed instruction delivered in English.

The four course sequence takes 32 weeks to complete during our 8-week academic sessions.

The program is entirely online but takes place synchronously. Meaning that weekly assignments and interaction on the learning platform is required at set points throughout the course.

Yes. You can expect to pay for textbooks (approximately $100) and any transcript costs (variable depending on format/shipping).

The grant offers tuition-free enrollment for up to 25 participants per session through Spring 1, 2026.

You will have the option to wait for the next session start or you can enter the program as a cash paying student (or use financial aid).
