If you're considering a career in school-based mental health, you've likely encountered two similar-sounding titles: school counselor and school psychologist. While both professionals are essential to student well-being, they serve distinctly different functions. The confusion is understandable, both work in schools, support mental health, and require graduate-level education. However, their training, daily responsibilities, and approaches to student support differ significantly, and recognizing these distinctions is crucial for choosing your professional path.

What Does a School Counselor Do?          

School counselors are certified educators who lead comprehensive school counseling programs that support students’ academic progress, postsecondary planning, and social-emotional growth. Their work is proactive and prevention-focused, designed to reach every student—not only those already experiencing challenges. Rather than waiting for problems to arise, school counselors intentionally teach skills and create supports that help students build resilience, make informed decisions, and stay engaged in school.

In practice, school counselors deliver services through classroom lessons, small-group counseling, individual student planning, and short-term responsive support for immediate concerns. Many school districts — particularly in Southern California following the COVID-19 pandemic — have established wellness centers on campus, which are often staffed and coordinated by school counselors. These centers serve as accessible hubs where students can drop in for support, participate in mindfulness activities, access mental health resources, or simply find a safe space during the school day. Wellness centers exemplify the school counselor's prevention-focused approach, creating proactive supports that normalize help-seeking behavior and make mental health resources visible and available to all students.

These professionals also help students set academic and career goals, strengthen coping and relationship skills, navigate peer and family challenges, and prepare for life after graduation. At the same time, they collaborate closely with teachers, administrators, and families to identify barriers to learning and create solutions that improve the overall school environment.

School counselors also use schoolwide data — such as attendance, behavior, and achievement trends — to design targeted interventions and close opportunity gaps for students who may be underserved. While they support mental health needs, their role typically centers on brief, solution-focused counseling and connecting students to additional resources when longer-term or specialized care is needed. By combining direct student support with leadership, advocacy, and systems-level planning, school counselors strengthen both individual outcomes and the broader school climate so that all students have the opportunity to thrive.

What Does a School Psychologist Do?

School psychologists are federally mandated school-based professionals who provide services across many domains to support students, families, schools, and the community.  School psychologists are trained in data-based decision-making, academic and behavioral interventions, crisis prevention and intervention, consultation, educational law, and counseling to help students thrive. They assist classroom teachers in designing optimal learning environments and work with school administration to create evidence-based systems to support academic success, mental health, and equitable learning for all students.

School psychologists partner with teachers, families, and school leaders in a variety of educational settings to identify barriers to learning and design evidence-based solutions. While most school psychologists work in Pre-K-12 public schools, they can also provide services in nonpublic schools, juvenile justice programs, county offices of education, and universities, and operate in independent practice. School psychologists are best known for conducting psychoeducational assessments as part of the evaluation process for special education services. Psychoeducational assessments are comprehensive, multifaceted evaluations that employ record review, interviews, observations, and standardized assessments to better understand a student’s cognitive, academic, adaptive, and social-emotional functioning. This information is then used to develop targeted supports to help address the student's overall needs.

Although school psychologists in many districts spend most of their time conducting assessments, they are trained to provide comprehensive support across all areas of education. No matter the setting, school psychologists use assessment, consultation, and intervention to guide decision-making, support diverse learners, and promote student well-being. From helping build capacity to implement and maintain Multitiered Support Systems (MTSS) to shaping individualized interventions, school psychologists' work directly impacts how students experience school.

The true differentiator between school psychology and school counseling is the reach of school psychologists. Given the nature of their work, school psychologists work with all key educational stakeholders, general education and special education students, and have knowledge across multiple systems. They support individual students while also influencing school-wide practices and policies.

Why are school psychologists and school counselors important?

The need for qualified mental health professionals in schools has never been more urgent. Students are currently navigating unprecedented challenges, from social media's impact on self-perception to the lingering effects of pandemic isolation. According to the 2023 CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a staggering 40% of high school students report persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, a concerning increase from just a decade ago. Understanding the distinct roles of the school counselor and school psychologist will not only clarify your career options but also illuminate how a cohesive team can effectively meet this growing, critical need.

Meet Maya: A Case Study in Collaborative Support

Maya, a high school junior, has been increasingly withdrawn in class. She tells her teacher she feels overwhelmed and "can't focus anymore" after watching TikTok videos about anxiety disorders. She's convinced she has a clinical anxiety disorder. Recently, she's started avoiding group projects and eating lunch alone in the library. Her grades have dropped from B's to D's in just six weeks, and her parents report she's having difficulty sleeping and frequently complains of stomachaches before school.

The School Counselor's Role: The school counselor meets with Maya to explore her feelings and experiences. Through conversation, the counselor discovers Maya is stressed about upcoming exams, friendship conflicts, and comparing herself to others on social media.

The school counselor:

  • Teaches Maya media literacy skills to critically evaluate mental health content online.
  • Works with her on coping strategies like deep breathing and time management.
  • Helps her develop emotional regulation skills through regular check-ins.
  • Coordinates with teachers to provide academic support.
  • Facilitates a parent meeting to discuss healthy social media boundaries at home.
  • Monitors her progress and adjusts interventions as needed.

The School Psychologist’s Role: The school psychologist joins Maya’s support team when her anxiety, physical symptoms, and withdrawal start to significantly interfere with learning and daily life at school. They focus on understanding the underlying factors contributing to her distress and consult with the teachers and family to determine what additional supports are needed to help her feel safer, more confident, and more successful at school.

The school psychologist may:

  • Use data-based decision making and consult with teachers and school counselors to identify and implement academic, behavioral, and social-emotional strategies proven to help students like Maya experiencing anxiety such as check-in/check-out interventions with a trusted adult and social-emotional interventions to increase emotional regulation and coping skills.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychoeducational assessment to determine if special education services are needed if Maya does not make significant progress with the pre-referral interventions. The assessment would include record reviews, interviews with key stakeholders including Maya, observations, and various assessments (i.e., cognitive, social-emotional, academic).
  • Assist with creating a behavior support plan, if needed.
  • Provide Maya and her family with outside resources to support her needs.

School-Based Mental Health Support: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Both school counselors and school psychologists share a fundamental goal: helping students thrive.
