"You're trying to minimize their trauma and help them understand the trauma they've already incurred and then resilient strategies for it. By acknowledging that trauma and using active listening and creating a space for them, you create that space for them to work through that trauma."
- Dr. Ellen Belluomi, MSW, UMass Global Associate Professor of Social Work
LGBTQIA+ Mental Health Support
Today’s topic is trauma-informed care strategies to support LGBTQIA+ populations and creating safe spaces.
According to the Human Rights Campaign, more than 20% of hate crimes reported in 2023 were motivated by hate against the LGBTQ community, and over 669 anti-trans bills have been introduced at the state and federal levels. To deliver high-quality care, it’s essential to recognize the systemic stressors that affect LGBTQIA+ individuals and the services they receive. Obtain the knowledge and tools needed to create a trauma-informed, inclusive LGBTQ safe space, understand the unique needs of LGBTQIA+ populations and the importance of safety and inclusivity, and learn how to apply trauma-informed practices that foster resilience and empowerment.
In this webinar you will:
- Examine the impact of trauma on LGBTQIA+ populations, particularly during periods of societal instability.
- Discover what is a safe space and strategies to create ones for LGBTQIA+ clients.
- Learn to identify and apply trauma-informed practices to create safe and affirming spaces.
- Develop culturally competent strategies for building trust and empowering LGBTQIA+ clients.
- Explore approaches to advocating for systemic change and greater inclusion within behavioral health settings
