student doing online school work.

Deciding to earn your degree at University of Massachusetts Global is an exciting and a significant first step in your journey! UMass Global fosters a culture of support that helps students achieve their educational goals.

Now what does the full process from inquiry to the start of classes look like for a prospective student? Let’s dive into each of the steps you will need to take to start classes.

Step 1: Connect with Your Enrollment Coach

Your journey at UMass Global begins with a call with our Enrollment Coaching Center, where you will be assigned a dedicated enrollment coach. Think of them as your personal guide through the admissions process. During that first conversation, your coach will answer initial questions, explain what to expect, and help you explore programs that match your interests and goals, and walk you through our transfer policy and the rest of the admissions process.

From that first call to admission, your coach is there to make sure your path to enrollment is clear, supported, and tailored to your needs.

Who to contact? Speak with an enrollment coach at (800) 746-0082 or email enroll@umassglobal.edu.

Step 2: Submit Your Application and Required Documents

Once you’re confirmed UMass Global is a good fit, it’s time to apply! The application is simple, free, and available to complete online. After you submit it, you’ll get an email with a link to your personal Application Dashboard — a one-stop hub for tracking your progress. There, you’ll find a checklist of required documents, deadlines, and next steps to keep you on track.

Application deadlines are two weeks prior to the start of the program. So, be sure to give yourself ample time to request transcripts, discuss your academic plan with your coach, and explore financial options. You can view current deadlines and start dates here: Apply Now | UMass Global.

We want your application process to be as seamless as possible, so we’ve designed these steps to help you along the way. Because the process may look a little different depending on your program or level, we’ll walk you through what to expect in the following sections.

Undergraduate Applicants

Undergraduate students who are applying for an associate or bachelor’s degree.

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

To begin your educational journey at UMass Global, you first must be admitted as an undergraduate (associate and bachelor’s degree candidates). For admission, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

You’ll need to have completed high school or have an equivalent level of education. To verify that, we accept any of these documents:

  • A high school diploma or transcript
  • A General Education Development (GED) certificate
  • A state-authorized high school equivalency certificate or diploma
  • A state-recognized home study certificate or transcript
  • Documentation from an approved foreign evaluation service certifying international coursework equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma

In addition to the above, there may be additional specific requirements for the program you want to enroll in.

  • Undergrads without 12 transferable college credits, equaling a combined GPA of 2.0 or higher, will start their UMass Global journey in LBSU 100 Student Success Strategies during the first session. This course is designed to set you up for success from day one, giving you practical tools for college-level work — like stronger study skills, helpful test-taking approaches, better time management, and stress-reduction techniques — so you can feel more confident and stay on track as you move through your program.
  • If past academic performance doesn’t reflect your current ability, UMass Global’s Academic Fresh Start program can help you begin with a clean slate.

To confirm any additional admission needs, check the academic catalog and talk with your assigned enrollment coach to ensure you meet all undergraduate requirements for your specific program.

How to Submit Your Undergraduate Application

To apply for an undergraduate program, please submit:

  • Your online application, including a list of every college/university/career institution/military institution/etc. where you earned academic credit.
  • Official transcripts from all prior institutions.
  • TIP: Upload your unofficial transcripts to your application for expedited admission.
  • Official transcripts will be required by the end of your first session.
  • UMass Global will attempt to order official transcripts from all institutions listed on your application. However, some institutions do not allow 3rd party ordering, so check your email for confirmation.

Please note: Missing transcripts will delay the application process, so be sure all institutions are included. Electronic transcripts should be sent directly from the issuing school to the UMass Global Admissions Office at admtranscripts@umassglobal.edu.

For paper transcripts, all documents must arrive at the Admissions Office in a sealed envelope from the institution of record. Mail all transcripts to:

University of Massachusetts Global
ATTN: Office of Admission
65 Enterprise, Suite 150
Aliso Viejo, CA 92656

To walk you through it, we’ve created this helpful undergrad admissions video you can use as a guide. For additional questions, reach out to your enrollment coach for support.

International Applicants

To apply, international students will need to complete the following three steps:

Step 1: Complete Transcript Evaluation

You will need to attain a course-by-course transcript evaluation from International Education Research Foundation (IREF), World Education Services, or other National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) accredited member institution.

These evaluations must be dated within one year and must include:

  • A course-by-course report.
  • A copy of the official academic transcripts used by the evaluation agency.

Step 2: Upload Your Documents

As an international student, you must submit all required documents directly through the online application portal.

Step 3: Submit Your Online Application:

Lastly, you will need to complete and submit your application for review.

Who to contact? Call (800) 746-0082 or email apply@umassglobal.edu.

Returning Student Applicants

Returning students will fall into two buckets; less than 2 years leave, and more than 2 years leave.

Students returning after less than two years are still considered active. In this case, your first step is to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor to review your most recent educational plan and create an updated return plan. After that, you’ll connect with a one-stop specialist to discuss payment options and finalize your re-enrollment.

Who to contact? Call (800) 746-0082 or email acadadvisorol@umassglobal.edu.

Students returning after more than two years are considered inactive and will need to restart the admissions process. The first step is to contact the Enrollment Coaching Center to begin reapplying. Previously submitted transcripts remain on file in your student records and do not need to be resubmitted. However, if you’ve completed any new coursework since leaving UMass Global, you’ll need to provide official transcripts from those institutions.

Who to contact? Call (800) 746-0082 or email enroll@umassglobal.edu.

Step 4: Processing, Acceptance, and Next Steps

Students can track their admission status through the application portal. If admitted, you will be notified of your acceptance by email from the Office of Admission and by phone from your enrollment coach. After you submit all required application documents, your admission review typically takes about 3–10 business days, depending on your academic level and program.

Please note: admitted doesn’t mean committed — you still have time to ask questions, explore financial options, and confirm you are ready to move forward before signing your final financial agreement.

Once admitted, your enrollment coach will set up a new student appointment for you with an academic advisor. You will then receive a Calendly appointment link that contains the agreed upon date and time, the academic advisor’s name, and the Zoom room link to the advisor’s meeting room. This is where you will officially be introduced to your academic advisor, who will remain with you through your degree program. If you lose contact information, you can always find the name of your advisor on your student Degreeworks page. Your advisor will show you how to access this page during your appointment and will share a link to it in a follow-up email as well.

Your academic advisor will then help you create a personalized education plan tailored to your goals, schedule, and selected program. Our advisors will also guide you through:

  • Selecting courses that align with your interests and fulfill degree requirements.
  • Staying on track to graduate by mapping out each term and checking in to help you adjust your plan as needed.
  • Ensure your program remains flexible and manageable by helping you decide course loads and formats that fit your work, family, and life commitments.

From admission to graduation, your advisor remains a consistent source of support and guidance.

Step 5: Financial Planning

After you have been admitted, submit the UMass Global Scholarship Verification Form to see if you may be eligible for a UMass Global scholarship.

During your initial new student appointment, your advisor will work with you to set up a meeting with a one-stop specialist who will help you build a plan for financing your education.

One-stop specialists will help you explore ways to pay for school and guide you through your selected plan, which may include:

  • Identifying required documents for your specific financial plan.
  • Providing financial guidance and literacy.
  • Explaining how specific benefits work including military or partnership benefits.
  • Guidance through scholarships, tuition and fees, textbook ordering, financial aid, and the FAFSA process.
  • Assistance with registering for classes.

One-stop works with active duty, VA students, and VA vocational rehab students, as well as partner students, state vocational rehab students, and cash paying students. After your one-stop appointment, expect a follow-up email that includes a summary of your financial funding choices, any steps you need to complete, and helpful university resources and tools.

While each student has a dedicated advisor, you can call into the one-stop department and speak with any specialist for assistance.

Processing Financial Aid

  • After you meet with one-stop, you will submit your financial aid application to the Financial Aid Office.
  • The Financial Aid Office will review the application and process your award accordingly.
  • You will then receive an award letter via your student email detailing the financial aid awarded to you.
  • You must sign the award and send it back to the Financial Aid Office signaling acceptance.

Step 6: Preparing for Your First Class

To prepare for classes, you should complete the online New Student Orientation (in Brightspace), review your course schedule thoroughly, and connect with student support services to make sure you’re ready for your first day. New students are given access to Brightspace about 3 days after being admitted. Once enrolled, you will have access to your courses in Brightspace at 5:00 p.m. PDT on the Friday before the class begins (classes always start on a Monday).

UMass Global’s additional support services include:

Many degree programs begin six times per year, so you can start whenever you’re ready!

Financial Planning:

  • Big tip: Students should be at computer for one-stop appointments.

Yes. All UMass Global courses are designed to be fully online, so you won’t be required to attend in-person classes. However, if you are in a program that requires fieldwork, you may be required to attend this in person. Check your specific program for details or discuss with your academic advisor.

Some programs may also use live Zoom sessions or other interactive online platforms as part of the learning experience, so it is best to check on your specific program requirements. For information on how a course or program is delivered, students should review the program or catalog page and reach out to their academic advisor with any questions.

UMass Global accepts a wide range of transfer credits to help you get the most out of your previous learning and experience.

You may be able to transfer credits from:

  • University of Massachusetts Global coursework
  • Coursework from other institutionally accredited post-secondary institutions
  • Military training
  • Dual credit
  • AP Advanced Placement coursework
  • International Baccalaureate
  • Approved PLA (Prior Learning Assessment):
    • CLEP (College Level Examination Program)
    • Defense Language Proficiency Examination (DLAT/DLPT)
    • DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST) scores

For undergraduate students, there is no time limit to transfer credits. However, if you are enrolling in a UMass Global MyPath (CBE) program, there is a minimum grade requirement of B- or better from accredited institutions.

Please check your specific program, as some others do require a minimum grade for acceptance of transfer credits.

For graduate students, all transferable coursework must be within 7 years of the completion date, with a minimum grade of no less than 3.0 or “B.” All graduate programs must be completed within a 7 year period.

How does the Academic Fresh Start policy affect transfer credits?

  • Under the Academic Fresh Start policy, UMass Global allows undergraduate applicants to exclude all college or military coursework completed 10 or more years prior to the intended start term from admission consideration, if they believe it is not reflective of their current ability to be successful. However, this means no grades or credits from that period will transfer or be counted toward degree requirements. Coursework completed within the last 10 years must still be submitted via official transcripts and meet current transfer and admission standards and cannot be excluded.

You can find complete course listings and prerequisite details for every UMass Global program in the Academic Catalog. The catalog includes up-to-date degree requirements, foundational courses, and detailed course descriptions for undergraduate and graduate programs.

Some program pages on the UMass Global website also highlight key prerequisite or foundational courses, but the Academic Catalog is the most comprehensive and reliable source for reviewing your full program plan.

Instead of a traditional course checklist, UMass Global provides students with a degree audit. This tool lists all the courses required for your program and uses icons to show your progress — including which courses are completed, in progress, or not yet started. A key at the bottom explains what each icon means, making it easy to track your path toward graduation.

Textbook access can look a little different depending on your program:

  • MyPath programs: Course materials are provided, so students do not typically need to purchase separate textbooks. All content, curriculum, and required readings are housed in the learning platform (Brightspace).
  • Other programs: Most students get their books and required materials through the UMass Global online bookstore: Official University of Massachusetts Global Bookstore. During your new student appointment, your academic advisor will review how to obtain books for your specific program — including any low-cost or included material options.

Tuition due dates are set by term and can change each academic year. Students should always check the current Academic Calendar for the most up-to-date tuition deadlines.

Students can find a full, up-to-date list of all current fees, which may vary by program, on the Tuition and Fees page in the Academic Catalog.

Some programs may also have program-specific fees, so it’s important to review details for your particular program and talk with your enrollment coach about what applies to you. Active-duty military students in all undergraduate and master’s programs are exempt from the technology fee.

If you need to step away from classes because of life events, emergencies, or other obligations, you have options — but it’s important to coordinate with your academic advisor as soon as possible so you understand how a leave could affect your academic status and progress.

In general, students who leave UMass Global in good standing and are absent for no more than twelve consecutive sessions do not need to reapply and can keep the same program requirements they had under their original catalog year. If a student is not actively attending courses by Monday of Week 2 of the thirteenth session of absence, they will be withdrawn from the university and may need to go through a return or readmission process.

Veterans who leave UMass Global to perform military service and receive an honorable discharge are eligible to be readmitted with the same academic status they had when they last attended, as long as their absence does not exceed five years. Because policies and impacts can vary by situation, students should always review the Academic Policies and Procedures section of the Academic Catalog and speak directly with their academic advisor to discuss next steps and supports available to them.

Yes. Eligible students are welcome to participate in a UMass Global commencement ceremony (“walk” at graduation). Ceremonies are currently held in California, typically with events in both Northern (winter commencement) and Southern California (summer commencement).

If you have questions about dates, locations, accessibility, or special arrangements, you can visit our Commencement page or email the Commencement team at commencement@umassglobal.edu for assistance.
