IRVINE, Calif. (Sept. 22, 2022) MilitaryTimes again included University of Massachusetts Global in its annual “Best for Vets: Colleges” rankings, which evaluate how well colleges and universities serve veterans, students who are actively serving in the armed services, and their families. For the 2022 edition of the rankings, UMass Global rated in the top half of all colleges and universities, as well as in the top half of schools primarily focused on online education.

The 2022 Best for Vets rankings rated UMass Global as the nation’s 15th best primarily online institution for students with close ties to the military. MilitaryTimes classified 35 colleges and universities as being primarily online.

Among private colleges and universities, UMass Global placed in the 21st spot, with 88 private schools on the list. MilitaryTimes rated UMass Global in 116th place overall, among a total of 311 surveyed colleges and universities.

MilitaryTimes’ rankings system takes several factors into consideration, including students’ graduation and persistence rates, military- and veteran-focused services, and the availability of financial assistance. UMass Global participates in several Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs programs, with active-duty military and reservist students being eligible to have the full cost of undergraduate tuition covered by the Tuition Assistance program.

During the 2020-21 data year, UMass Global enrolled nearly 600 undergraduates, and about 275 graduate students, who received Tuition Assistance from the Defense Department. Roughly 700 undergraduates, and nearly 500 graduates, received benefits via the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill.

UMass Global traces its history to its predecessors’ decision in 1958 to offer on-base courses at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Orange County, California. The lessons learned over decades’ worth of service to military students shaped UMass Global into its current status as a nonprofit university specializing in online programs for working adults.

More information on UMass Global programs for members of the military, veterans, and military families is available from the university’s Military & Veterans website.
