Brandman University’s contribution to innovative programs for higher education business and financial management recently earned it the Innovation Award from the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO).
Brandman University’s first-of-its-kind, real-time system for integrating business functions into Brandman MyPath ™, the competency-based education system, is called One Stop Middleware Portal (OMP) and was developed in a partnership with N2N.more
The point-of-service system allows the university’s functional business units to efficiently manage the entire student lifecycle with the competency-based environment. From prospective student to student and through graduation, unifies both administrative and student-facing services.
Built from the ground up, the cloud-based, mobile-ready OMP spans multiple software and enterprise applications and pulls them together into a single portal.
Chancellor Gary Brahm and Executive Vice Chancellors Phillip Doolittle and Charles Bullock accepted the award. Doolittle is the university’s chief financial officer and Bullock is the chief academic officer and provost. Coordination of both the financial management and academic sides of the university were key to making the innovative OMP work.
“We are a student-centric university. Helping prospective students find the program that fits their needs and then guiding them through the application, enrollment and attendance process has always been an important mission for Brandman University,” said Brahm.
Brandman launched the competency-based education initiative in late 2013 and quickly discovered that none of the existing term-based systems used in higher education supported the self-paced, non-term, direct assessment ecosystem that eventually was named Brandman MyPath ™.
To address the need, the university designed and built the new middleware platform in conjunction with N2N.
The platform integrates the multiple systems including the non-term mobile and web Learning Management System, the term-based Enterprise Resource Planning system and the non-term financial application. It also collects and analyzes attendance data to provide feedback on student engagement, progress and success, as well as meeting regulatory compliance requirements.
The platform offers a high level of business process efficiency in admissions, registrar functions, student accounts, financial aid and advising while eliminating the need to modify the existing Enterprise Resource Planning system used by the university.
In granting the award, NACUBO presenters noted that the cutting-edge innovation makes it unique in the higher education landscape.
“As we gather to examine the cornerstones of higher education and pave the way for the future, it’s fitting that we recognize these meritorious leaders and institutions,” said John Walda, president and CEO of NACUBO. “Each recipient is an example of the best of the sector and its tireless dedication to excellence.”
